The Emotional Side of Skin

How skincare supports both skin health and self-worth

Skin changes are deeply personal. They don’t just affect how we look - they affect how we feel. For many women, noticing lines, dullness or other visible shifts can chip away at confidence and even influence how we carry ourselves through the world.

At arké, we view skincare as more than a routine. It’s a moment of pause, a way to connect with yourself and a practice of compassion. Real care goes beyond surface-level beauty - it begins with self-acceptance and understanding your skin’s needs.

One of the main things I’ve seen in my 20+ years of professional skincare is how profoundly skin can affect someone’s emotional wellbeing,” says our founder Renee Hohaia. “People often come to me at their ‘final straw’ - whether it’s persistent acne, the first signs of ageing or just that uncomfortable feeling in their own skin. It’s about not liking what they see in the mirror  and that can impact every part of their lives.”

Helping people feel comfortable, confident, and supported in their own skin is what inspired Renee to create arké.

I know personally what it’s like to feel uneasy in your own skin. Guiding clients toward routines that nurture both their skin and their self-worth is the most rewarding part of my work. That emotional connection is just as important as the visible results.

Skincare, at its best, is both practical and emotional. It’s about building resilience, restoring health and cultivating a sense of self-compassion - because how you feel in your skin often influences how you show up in the world.
